So your children are grown and you have cooked many meals in your kitchen over the last 20+ years. When you stand in your kitchen you see well used appliances, dated countertops and cabinets that are scratched and faded. You have a hard time getting motivated to cook for your husband or friends and family when they visit. I totally understand! I think it is time for a kitchen makeover. You deserve a kitchen that you enjoy cooking in and makes you feel like a Master Chef. I am excited to share the top 5 kitchen design ideas if you are considering remodeling.
Consider The Cabinets
One of the first things I ask clients to consider when getting ready to renovate their kitchen is whether or not they want new cabinets. Replacing cabinets can be a large expense. Many people who have been in their home for many years are just ready for something completely new and this includes the cabinets. Good quality cabinets will cost approximately $10,000 depending on the size of your kitchen. However, there are other options available if you don’t want to spend quite that much money. Another option would be simply refacing your current cabinets. Refacing cabinets is very common and quite reasonable. Refacing entails taking all of the doors off of the cabinets and adding a veneer to what is left. Then you choose the type of new doors that you want on your cabinets. Everything is painted in the color of your choice. Presto! New cabinets. There are companies that specialize in doing this. The last option that you may want to consider would be simply having your current cabinets painted. If they are in good shape then a simple cleaning to remove all the grease and dirt first, then they can be painted in a beautiful durable paint color of your choice.
Once your cabinets are the color that you have always dreamed of then it is time to pick out new hardware. Choose something that is stylish and will compliment the color you have chosen. Cabinet hardware comes in a variety of styles as well as finishes at many different price points.
Once your cabinets are in you will probably want to add new backsplash. I LOVE all the choices for backsplash these days! I could spend hours looking at all the beautiful colors and patterns. I personally prefer something that has pattern and texture to it. You can choose something simple like a subway tile but add interest by having it installed vertically instead of horizontally. Subway tile is not terribly expensive and comes in a variety of colors. You can also find beautiful glass, marble or natural stone tiles. They come in a variety of patterns such as herringbone, quatrefoil and basketweave just to name a few. Your backsplash should compliment your cabinets. If your have neutral color cabinets you may want to consider tile with interesting color and pattern. If your cabinets are a rich color you may want to have a more neutral backsplash.
Do You Want An Island?
Islands are so very popular these days in kitchens. They add additional counter space for food preparation or a place for a family to eat and friends to gather when you are hosting a party. Do you want an island in your newly designed kitchen? Do you have space to add an island? Kitchen islands do not all have to be large. I recently had clients that have a fairly small kitchen but wanted to add an island. The solution? We had a custom island made complete with a beautiful stone top and it is on wheels. They can move it as needed. It is perfect for their situation and it may be perfect for yours as well. Another thing to consider when adding an island to your kitchen is painting it a different color than your cabinets. I love the look of islands that are a totally different color than the rest of the cabinetry.
Let’s Talk Countertops
Your new kitchen is taking shape. You have chosen your cabinets and hardware, backsplash and decided whether or not you want an island. Now, let’s talk countertops. There is such a variety of choices for countertops. Which is best for your situation? For years granite has been the go to for kitchen countertops. But today many people are looking at other choices. Granite is still a good choice if you prefer to use it. It is heat resistant, durable and easy to clean. It is cut from veins of naturally recurring stone so each slab is unique. The down side to granite is that it is porous and needs to be sealed once a year. It is also not as expensive as quartz or marble. However, quartz is gaining in popularity for kitchen countertop choices. It is an engineered material that combines quartz and resin into a durable non-porous slab. The slabs are uniform and are resistant to cracking, scratching and staining. Quartz is slightly more expensive than granite but an excellent choice for kitchens. The last countertop material that I would like to discuss is marble. Everyone LOVES marble and dreams of having it in their homes. It is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL material. It will be the most expensive of your choices. Marble has beautiful veining and is a natural material. It does, however, scratch (called etching), chip and stain. You do not want a glass of red wine or grape juice to spill on that counter. Many people choose marble because they love the way it looks over time. Any material you choose I am sure will look lovely in your newly renovated kitchen.
Things are coming together as you design your new kitchen. One of the last things you will need to consider are appliances. If you currently have appliances in your kitchen that are at least 20 years old, I would recommend getting new ones. You may decide that you want to splurge and get that Wolf range with six burners and two ovens. I say go for it! Do you want a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer. If you enjoy cooking and do a lot of entertaining you may want to take the plunge and purchase top end appliances. You have worked hard raising your family and maybe you have saved for years just for this moment.
If you do not want to spend quite that much money on appliances there are still a number of great choices at a more reasonable price. Samsung and Bosch both manufacture excellent appliances. There is also Kenmore and Maytag just to name a few.
Before purchasing new appliances consider your needs as well as your budget. Do your research and purchase something you will enjoy for years to come.
So here you have the basic things to consider if you are getting ready to remodel your kitchen. You may also want to consider new lighting and possibly even new flooring.
Whatever you choose when doing a kitchen renovation, it should be something that will bring you joy and happiness for many years. A kitchen truly is the hub of the home. Make it a place where everyone will want to gather as well as a place where you enjoy spending time cooking.
Until next time,
