Do you enjoy having friends and family visit from out of town? Do you have a room where they can relax at the end of the day? Is it inviting and comfortable? If not, then it might be time to delight your guests with an updated guest bedroom. If your guest room is feeling a little drab and lacking style and comfort, don’t worry, I am going to help you give your room a fresh, new look so that your guests may never want to leave.
Start With The Walls
Take a good long look at your guest room. The first place to start your makeover is with the walls. Choose a fresh new color that will revive the room. Most people like to choose a neutral color. Neutral does not have to mean beige. Consider a creamy off white or even a robin’s egg blue. Paint is by far the easiest and most inexpensive way to update any room in your home. I am personally drawn to color and am not afraid to put it on walls. We have a guest bedroom that is a beautiful SW Shagreen. It looks wonderful with the dark wood sleigh bed and antique dresser. Because the furniture is dark, a light color on the wall adds elegance. If you are overwhelmed by all the color choices then hire an interior designer to help you decide on the perfect color palette for your space.
Next Consider Furniture
Now that the walls have a fresh coat of paint it is time to consider furniture for your room. A good guest room should include a comfortable, beautiful bed. An upholstered headboard gives a luxurious look to the room. I prefer to add a side table to each side of the bed if room allows. This way, guests have room for a book, glasses or a glass of water. A luggage rack can be useful and could be tucked in the closet if space is tight. If there is room you may want to consider adding a comfortable chair for reading.
I love to add new bedding to guest bedrooms when helping clients update their space. This is a great opportunity to add color to your room if your walls are neutral. Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel have a great selection. If your budget allows you may want to consider Peacock Alley or even custom made bedding. Any way you go, bedding breathes beauty into any guest room. Your guests will feel as if they are staying at a luxury hotel.
Lighting and Art
Lighting in any room is always important. Consider the type of lighting you currently have in your guest room. It might be a good idea to add table lamps to each night stand. Or, possibly reading lights so that your guest can read a good book before turning off the light for the night. If you wanted to do something unusual you could add pendant lights above the night stands or even sconces to each side of the bed. Lighting creates a relaxing environment.
You may also want to invest in art for the walls. It does not need to be expensive. Art adds color, depth and texture to a room. This could be art that you purchase or photos of places you have traveled or even family pictures.
Now that every thing is in place it is time to add accessories to your guest room. This is just adds one more layer to the room. Add pillows or family photos. A beautiful throw blanket is a nice touch and adds another layer if your guests get cold. You can even add a vase of fresh flowers to let your guests know just how glad you are they came for a visit. You might even consider a basket of their favorite goodies!
There are times when we all need to update our guest rooms. When family and friends travel to our home to spend time with us they are showing us how much they care and how important we are in their lives. I think the least we can do is provide a comfortable, beautiful space for them to rest, unwind and rejuvenate at the end of each day. Follow the above steps and you will create a luxurious space for those people who are so special to you.
