First impressions are of the utmost importance when welcoming guests into your home. You open the door and the scent of fresh flowers or a candle along with soft lighting lure them inside. It is as if they are taken by the hand and invited in so as to become a part of all that awaits once they cross the threshold. That is what our entryways are called to be-inviting. An inviting entryway does not need to be complicated or expensive. It just needs to be a space that welcomes friends and family into your home. How can your entryway welcome those closest to you?
An inviting entryway begins with lighting. Lighting provides a soft hue as your guests are welcomed into your home. Overhead lighting can be provided by chandeliers or pendent lights. Consider the height of your ceiling first. You do not want your ceiling light to hang too low. If your ceiling height is 8’ or 9’ you will probably need to consider either a flush mount light or a semi-flush mount. However, if you have a very high ceiling then a grand chandelier may be in order. You may also want to consider putting this type of light on a dimmer for a softer glow. Lamps are also another way to add a soft glow to your entryway.
Add Wall Decor
I love to add a piece of art or a mirror to an entryway wall. Art can provide interest, texture and color to the space. It also creates a focal point for guests when they enter your home. Adding a contemporary piece of art or a picture that reminds you of a special place that you visited is always a wonderful idea for this space. For small entryways I believe that mirrors are an excellent choice. They reflect light and make the space feel larger. Mirrors can also provide a place for guests to do a quick check before joining others for the evening.
Add An Area Rug
The entry into a home is the perfect place to add an area rug. An area rug will create warmth and is an excellent way to add color. The type of rug you choose can set the tone for the style that will be found throughout your house whether it is traditional, contemporary or something else. Boutique Rugs and Bellacor are two companies that I recommend checking out when you are looking for an area rug for your entryway or any other space in your home.
By providing storage in your entryway you are saying to your guests, I am glad you are here. Stay a while. Whether it is baskets for umbrellas or shoes. Or a bowl for keys, these things allow guests to relax and enjoy their time with you. Storage is also a plus for your family as you come in from soccer or are headed out to school. It is a place where items can be put so that they can be easily found when you need them and you are not running all over the house looking for them. I love the use of wicker baskets. They will hold just about anything while looking stylish!
Offering some type of seating in your entryway, whether it is a bench or a chair. This will help guests feel relaxed and welcomed into your home. There may be times when someone needs to sit down while looking for keys in her purse or to take off his shoes. Seating can also be just decorative. It adds one more element of hospitality right inside your door.
Add Personal Touches
Your entryway gives your guests an idea of what awaits them inside. It tells them about you. Don’t be afraid to add personal elements to it. I enjoy adding books from places we have visited. I also enjoy adding scented candles as well as flowers. You can also change elements with the seasons. With fall almost here, it is a perfect time to add pumpkins or colorful leaves and nuts or pinecones. Natural elements are wonderful items to add this time of year.
I hope you are now inspired to update or refresh your entryway. All entryways should be an inviting space for any guests that come to your home. You want them to relax, feel welcome and stay awhile. Even our sweet Pudding enjoys welcoming guests into our home.
Until next time,
