Do you work from home or maybe you just need a space to pay bills and have a laptop? Then an office space is vital to your home. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a room. It could be a corner of the family room or maybe a loft or landing area in your home. Regardless of the size, a fresh office space should be fun, functional and inspire creativity. Today we will talk about how to create an inspiring office space; a place where you will want to spend time.
Determine the Purpose
Before you begin purchasing things for your office it is important to determine its purpose. Will you spend most of your day there or just a short period of time daily? Will you be holding meetings? Do you need storage for files? All of this will determine how much space to budget for.
Now that you have chosen a space for your office, it is time to determine what furniture you will need. When I think of an office, I immediately think of a desk as an essential piece of furniture. Not all desks need to be large. They come in a variety of sizes in a variety of materials and at different price points. You will need to decide where your desk will be placed and then measure, measure, measure! There is nothing worse than finding a desk that you love but you forgot to measure the wall or space where it will be placed and once it is purchased find out that is doesn’t fit.
If you need a desk then you will also more than likely need a chair as well. Most work spaces are between 28”-31”. When choosing a chair to go with your desk you should be able to sit comfortably with your feet on the floor and your knees at a 90 degree angle. You should be sitting at a height so that you do not have to reach up to get to the keyboard or other items on your desk. Also, measure under your desk to determine how much leg room you will have. Once that is done, consider how long you will be sitting at your desk. If you will be sitting for long periods of time you will probably want a comfortable chair. However, if you will be sitting at your desk for shorter periods of time then you might want to consider something that is fun.
If you will be holding meetings in your office then you will also need to consider a place for people to sit when they are with you. Depending on the size of your office, you may have room for a couch or small love seat. Otherwise, a chair or two will be all you need. When shopping look for something stylish and professional that speaks to the type of business you run as well as you personality.
Now that you have your office furniture it is time to consider how you will stay organized. Everything should have a designated place. If you have room maybe consider purchasing a file cabinet. It doesn’t necessarily need to be large; you can find them to fit under your desk if you have room. Otherwise, consider baskets, magazine holders or possibly install shelves. If room is an issue, you may need to get creative. Cork boards and metal grids can be added to a wall.
Lighting is also an important component of any office. Ideally your office will have a window that will allow for natural light. But, some offices do not have windows so artificial lighting must be considered. If there is room on your desk you can always add a lamp. There are all shapes and sizes, find one that will compliment your office furniture. However, if your desk does not have room for a lamp then you may want to add sconces or purchase a floor lamp.
One of the most important aspects of having an office is to allow it to be a place where you will be inspired each time you are in it. Consider your personality and add touches that will inspire you to work or pay bills. Consider adding pictures or quotes even family photos to your office space. I love the look of orchids or flowers. Add anything that will make you smile. Make this special space yours.
Until next time,
