If you are an Empty Nester or a Baby Boomer, it is very likely that you have lived in your current home for a number of years. And, over those years have collected furniture that may have become slightly outdated. Or, maybe you have held on to sentimental items throughout the years. As we journey through life there are certain things that bring back memories or stir feelings inside of us. I believe it is important to hold on to some of these treasures.
So, is there a way to incorporate some of your older pieces with newer furnishings to freshen up your home? Absolutely! My husband and I have furniture that I inherited before we ever married. It is boarding on antique but it is only valuable to me. We also took several things that had special memories for him out of his parent’s home when they passed away. We have found a way to utilize them among our more recent purchases. I think incorporating items that have special memories is an important part of a home. They add warmth and character and speak to who you are. As an interior designer it is part of my job to help clients assimilate these special items with new furniture and décor to give their home a fresh updated look.
Add A New Look To Old Pieces
In the above picture my client really wanted to keep the dining room set that belonged to her parents. After talking with her about what she felt was important, we decided to chalk paint portions of the table, chairs and china cabinet. We had the chair cushions recovered in a fabric that compliments the walls. New hardware was added to the cabinet. Then, for pattern and texture fabric pieces were added to the back of the china cabinet. The inside was filled with a combination of newly purchased items as well as several family heirlooms. The changes give her dining room a completely new look that will last for years to come. It was a simple, easy solution that allowed her to keep pieces that were important to her. So consider ways that you might add a new look to older pieces. It could be using paint, wallpaper or even fabric.
New Lighting Is A Must
One way to add character and a fresh look to any room is with new lighting; it is a must! I love the look of new updated lighting in an older home. And there are so many choices! Adding the drum light with crystal pieces gave this dining room a French Provencial look which is what my client wanted. She loves her dining table and chairs and found the pink chest at an antique store. Lighting has changed over the years. There are lanterns, orbital lights, drum lighting and the list goes on. You can also find many beautiful table and floor lamps. And, I love the variety of materials you will find for today’s lighting; metal, wood, bamboo and the list goes on.
Add New Décor Items
Another very easy way to blend older items you may have with newer ones is to add new decorative pieces to your room. Anything from pillows or throws to decorative boxes, trays and more.
Art and mirrors add texture, depth and interest to a wall. If you have pictures of places you have traveled or family photos add them to your room. Find beautiful frames and then you can put them on a wall or set them on a desk or table. We love to travel and so I tend to take a lot of pictures. We have pictures on walls as well as bookcases of places we have been. I have special family photos throughout our home as well.
So, if you are looking for ways to freshen up your home yet keep things that are special to you I hope you have found this helpful. If you have difficulty figuring out how to make things flow find an interior designer near you and schedule a consultation or book several hours to have her/him place your items in a way that makes sense and accentuates what is important to you. There is no doubt that you can blend older items with newer ones and get a fresh new look for you home.
Until next time,
