One of the most fun projects that I have worked on has been the redesigning of a family’s bonus room. The request: make it a colorful, fun place for our teenage children to hang out with their friends as well as a place our young daughter will enjoy. The challenge: take a long, narrow room; 41’11”x12’2” and make it the place all the kids in the neighborhood want to hang out.
As you can see from the “Before” photos, this room was in desperate need of help.
The first call to action was coming up with a plan for this odd shaped room. After talking at length with the client a budget of $10,000-$15,000 was determined to be a reasonable investment. Next, I decided that the best option would be to break it into three different areas. There would be a media area, game area and art area. The room would be painted fun, vibrant colors, new furniture would be purchased and new window treatments made. The client did request that several items such as the tv, a cabinet for storage and a fish on the wall be included in the overall design.
For each specific area I determined the items that would need to be purchased. For the media area we would add a sectional sofa with several fun chairs and a new coffee table as well as an entertainment stand. To separate the media area from the game area a console table would be purchased as well. The second area would house a foosball table, chairs and game storage. The art area was specifically designed for the youngest daughter who love to draw and create. A small bookcase to hold art supplies and a fun light were in store.
Now that a plan was in place the fun could begin. The client wanted to lighten up this dark space that sits above their garage with fun colors. I love working with clients that are not afraid of color! We decided on three different Sherwin Williams colors: Spa for the walls, Retiring Blue for the ceiling and Clean Green on an accent wall. Perfect colors for this soon to be kid hang out.
Next, it was time to find furniture and accessories. My client asked for a contemporary look with clean lines and pops of color both in the furniture as well as the accessories. After giving her several options of different furniture it was time to place orders. She chose a teal sectional sofa that would provide plenty of seating when watching a movie. We also added a slipper chair and bean bag seat for fun. A cocktail table with ample storage underneath provides a place for drinks or snacks. A new media cabinet houses their tv and fun décor items. Baskets on each side add texture and storage.
For the game area it was decided that a foosball table and director’s chairs would be fun. There is also a place to store board games. As for the art area, it is was all about their youngest daughter. I took the children’s table and chair set which was purchased from IKEA, paint it with chalk paint and recover the seats to make it look brand new. A book shelf for storage and a fun corner light topped off this special spot.
The Final Product
Once the room was painted and the new furniture and accessories had arrived it was time to schedule the Installation Day. I love this day! I get to spend the day arranging everything for my client’s special space. I enjoy finding the perfect place for each piece of furniture and each accessory. Small details are key. I always want each person that will use this room to find it fun as well as functional. So there are pillows and a blanket, containers for holding markers and crayons, even new lighting. When everything was in place it was time for the “big reveal.” The clients loved it:) This is what makes my job so fun. Seeing my client’s expressions when they first see their newly renovated space.
As I said earlier this was a very fun project. I love what I do. I love helping people create the room they have wanted and dreamed of probably for years. Any design project is an investment both of time and money. I understand it can be scary. It is important to trust the designer you hire and to have input into what you want to see in your new space. Communication and working together will always yield a wonderful result; a newly renovated space that you can enjoy for years to come!
Until next time,
