Do you dream of an airy space that still feels warm, personable and fresh? Well, you are in the right place. Today I will share tips on how to achieve a crisp interior aesthetic without leaning too far into a particular trend (such as modern or mid-century). In fact, I believe trends are nothing more than mass public opinion. I don’t want you to choose your design or soft furnishing highlights based on someone else’s choices. Rather, I support you in making sure your home reflects the emotions you want to feel, the legacy you have lived and the family you love. So, let’s dive into 3 easy ways to bring a fresh look to any room.
Window treatments are a must for every space. Whether drapery, blinds or shades. Whenever a new client, gives me a tour of their home and describes it as “unfinished,” the windows are usually bare or covered with something from a store. It doesn’t look or feel right and impacts the rest of the room.
I often recommend adding drapery or shades with a blackout lining to bedrooms, while suggesting Roman shades or natural woven shades for bathrooms or kitchens. Sheer drapes work well in family and living areas, especially if you want as much natural light as possible while maintaining some privacy.
Bottom line: Window treatments are a crucial design element that shouldn’t be ignored.
The next way to freshen a space is through lighting. The kitchen and bath can benefit from a designer’s touch through more than just floor plans and wall colors. In fact, lighting placement will easily make or break both spaces.
If your kitchen feels “less than,” consider its current lighting. Do you have can lights? Pendants? Under cabinet lighting? Each layer of lighting will enhance the design elements already in your space.
If your bathroom feels dingy, it likely needs better lighting as well. Updating vanity lights or sconces as well as adding more lights can do wonders to highlight other elements.
Consider the Floor
Look down. When was the last time you updated your area rugs? The final way to easily freshen a space is adding a new area rug. They are perfect for delineating spaces, creating cozy and complete living room seating, an are excellent for making home offices and bedrooms feel truly designed.
When selecting new area rugs, you will need to consider the color and shade of the flooring beneath it, wall colors, furniture colors and window treatments. Each soft furnishing should compliment and flow with the rest of your space.
Well, there you have it, Fresh Spaces 101. Three relatively easy ways to freshen up any space in your home.
